A memorial event was held on 12th December in gratitude for the selfless contribution to the daily practical assistance of the Chornobyl accident victims. On 12th December, in the Hall of Fame of the Latvian Museum of Fire-Fighting, the president of the Latvian Chornobyl Union Arnolds Verzemnieks and vice-president Maris Sops presented a badge of honor of the union "Chernobyl" to Guna Laganovska, Professor of Ophthalmology of Riga Stradins University and head of the ophthalmology clinic at the hospital; Rinalds Mucins, chairman of the board of Pauls Stradins Clinical University Hospital; Agris Reinis, director of the rehabilitation center "Blue Cross" at the Kuldiga municipality.
Photographer Ernests Repšs, a participant in the liquidation of the consequences of the Chornobyl accident, was awarded the Medal of Honour of the Latvian Defence Foundation "Lāčplēsis". Ainars Upenieks, a Latvian Reserve Officers' Association member, was awarded the insignia of honor. The Order of Bogdan Khmelnitsky of Ukraine was awarded to Arvids Platperis, associate professor of the Jazeps Vitols Latvian Academy of Music.
The Charity Medal of the Ukrainian International Association "Kraina" was awarded to Fridis Dimdins and Viesturs Perkons.
During the event, photographer Ernests Repss presented the laureates with copies of his album of events from the Chornobyl disaster.
At the end of the event, Romualds Razuks, a Latvian doctor and politician, presented the museum with a collection of Soviet-made fire and rescue vehicles, which will significantly enrich the museum's collection and will soon be put on display.
