Every year at the end of November, the traditional contest "Mind the fire" for Riga 4th grade students is organised by the Daugmale Children and Youth Centre and the Latvian Firefighting Museum. For the third time, the event is held under pandemic conditions and the solutions to the competition tasks are submitted and evaluated online.
The contest includes theoretical and graphical tasks. The contestant chooses a theoretical question - on safe operation of electrical appliances, first aid instructions, correct calling, informing and communicating with fire and rescue, and other services. The graphic section shows the solution to the chosen theoretical questions.
This year 87 students from 8 educational institutions took part in the contest. The most active were students of O. Kalpaka Riga Folk Arts Primary School, Riga 86 Secondary School, Riga Sarkandaugava Primary School and Andrejs Pumpurs Riga 11 Primary School. The winners also include students from Riga 92 and Riga 34 Secondary Schools.
In order to successfully complete the tasks of the contest, the students have discussed theoretical issues, watched videos, went on excursions to the Latvian Firefighting Museum and the Fire Station.
The answers to the theoretical questions and the drawings were evaluated by the jury of the Latvian Firefighting Museum and the Children and Youth Centre "Daugmale".
Theoretical questions were evaluated in 3 categories:
- Fire safety (how to call firefighters correctly),
- Electrical safety (how to use electrical appliances safely),
- Burns (first aid in case of a burn on the palm).
We asked for drawings of "Model fire trucks" or "Firefighter's costume".
